The WSET Level 1 Award in Wines was originally designed as an entry level qualification for new or inexperienced front line staff in hospitality and retail.  It has evolved and now experiences much broader appeal. Anyone just starting to learn about wine would benefit from this fun and interactive course.

During the morning session, we learn about wine and and how to taste in a more mindful way than simply drinking wine with friends on a patio. We'll explore different styles of wine, learn about the service and storage of wine and gain a little insight  and legal issues surrounding wine before we break for our catered lunch.

The afternoon is all about playing with your food. By combining different foods with wine, you'll learn how each of the major flavour senses (sweet, salt, bitter, sour, umami) interact with wine and change it for the positive (or negative). What a great take-away for the next time you're entertaining or dining out!

Who should take this course

  • You have limited wine knowledge and you want to  learn about the main styles of wine and the foods that work with them
  • You are starting your first job in hospitality or retail

Course outline

  • The main styles of wine
  • The WSET Level 1 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine
  • The characteristics of the common grape varieties
  • Service of wine
  • Health, safety and legal issues
  • The pairing of food and wine

This is a one-day course. There is a 30-question multiple choice test at the end of the day. When you pass, you will receive a certificate from Adventure in Wine as well as an official WSET Level 1 Award in Wine certificate and lapel pin.

The WSET Level 3 Award in Wines will develop your ability to describe wine accurately, and account in detail for the style, quality and price of wines. Our experienced educators will assist you to develop your analytic tasting abilities as we taste through approximately 90 wines.

Successful students will receive a WSET Level 3 certificate and lapel pin, and will be able to use the associated WSET certified logo.

Course outline

The course consists of 15 3-hr sessions. There will be a two week break and then the final exam.

We will be studying:

  • The key factors in the production of wine: location, grape growing, winemaking, maturation and bottling
  • The key characteristics of the main
    • still wines of the world
    • sparkling wines of the world
    • fortified wines of the world
  • How to make appropriate wine recommendations
  • How to taste wines using the WSET Level 3 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT)
  • Tutored tastings of approximately 90 wines

What are the requirements?

WSET Level 2 is not a prerequisite for this course. However, WSET Level 3 requires substantial wine knowledge and is quite a challenging program, even to those who have taken many other wine classes. For this reason, we highly recommend taking Level 2 before embarking on Level 3.

During the program, you will be expected to spend considerable time studying on your own. Including time spent in class, WSET recommends that a minimum of 84 hours is spent on preparation.

The final exam takes place two weeks after the last class. It is two hours in length and covers theory and tasting. The theory exam includes 50 multiple choice questions and four short written answers. For the tasting portion, candidates will be presented with two wines blind for which a complete analysis using the Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® will have to be written.
