Whether you’re a wine enthusiast who is interested in gaining an in-depth knowledge of wines or you’re employed in the drinks and hospitality industries and want to advance your career, this course is for you. As the program progresses, you’ll discover that you’ll be talking more confidently about wine to your friends and customers.

WSET Level 2 Award in Wines will introduce you to material beyond the basics. You’ll delve into the principal grape varieties grown around the world and the different styles of wine they produce, including sparkling and fortified wine. You’ll develop your palate with the guidance of our expert instructors and the 40+ carefully selected samples of wine you will receive as part of this course (Ontario only).

Frequently Asked Questions

  • There are no wine education prerequisites to the WSET Level 2 Award in Wines.

  • Your registration fee includes all the materials you will need to complete the study requirements and sit the exam including all the wines, which will be shipped to you.

    During the tasting sessions, you will learn to describe the wines and assess each wine's style and quality.

    If you don't live in Ontario, we are not able to ship the wine samples. However, we will provide you with a list of wines that you can purchase for the tastings. The fee is lower as a result.

  • Fortified wines are made strong (high alcohol) by the addition of a neutral spirit. There are many different fortified wines that are produced in various countries.

  • Your course fee includes:

    The samples for the wine-tasting element are only available for Ontario students. Upon successful completion, you will receive both a lapel pin and a course certificate.

  • Our students are taught the WSET Level 2 Systematic Approach to Tasting. It uses a three-tier evaluation method starting with appearance, then moving to aromas and palate. All this information is used to draw a conclusion about the wine's quality

  • Yes. Courses are run just as they would be in an in-person class . Classes are virtual, which means they take place on a specific day and time. After you have registered, we will provide you with a link that you will use for the duration of the course to access the live lessons.

    All sessions are recorded and posted on the Student Portal so that if you miss a class, you can still watch the entire session and taste with the group - something that you can't do in an in-person class!

  • The actual class time for the course is 16 hours, run either over 8 weeks or condensed in three full-day sessions. We do recommend students carve out, at a minimum, an additional 14 hours of study and preparation for the exam.

  • The minimum age is the legal drinking age in the country or province in which you're taking the course.

  • You are required to achieve 55% or better in order to pass the exam. Exams are graded as follows:

    Pass: a score of 55% to 64%

    Merit: a score of 65% to 84%

    Distinction: a score of 85% or above

  • No. You can only take the exam on a computer. This is your primary device. Any computer running Windows, Mac, or Linux is acceptable. Smart phones or tablets are not permitted.

    A secondary device is also required. Any device that can record video is acceptable - computer, smart phone, or tablet - which will record the space in which you are writing the exam.

  • There's a lot to learn in this course, including how wine grapes are grown and how wine is made. We cover the main international varieties such as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, regionally important grapes such as Sangiovese and Albariño, and sweet, fortified and sparkling wines.

  • You are required to pay your full course fee at the time of registration. Payments can be made via credit card or e-transfer.

  • All of our instructors hold the WSET Diploma, the highest qualification that WSET offers. As well, instructors have continued learning by visiting wine regions, through their work, and taking additional wine courses.

  • Weekly classes are held between 18:30 and 20:30, while their condensed counterparts are held between 10:00 and 16:00.

  • Yes. We offer gift cards for purchase starting at $25. You can even purchase a gift card for the entire course. Your gift recipient will be able to apply the value of the card to any course or tasting we offer.

    Redemption requires entering the unique gift card number during checkout for the balance reduction to be applied.

  • You'll be allowed access to the Student Portal for one year starting at registration time. Apart from the posted session recordings, you will also have access to mock exams, weekly review questions, videos, and maps.

  • No. If you are unsuccessful on your exam, you will need to pay a $175 resit fee.

  • Registration closes 10 days before the WSET Level 2 Award in Wines course start date. This ensures that the required supplies are shipped and reach you in a timely manner.

  • While the Wine & Spirit Education Trust is headquartered in the UK, the WSET Level 2 Award in Wines certification is recognized globally.

  • If you are interested in gaining more advanced knowledge, consider our WSET Level 3 Award in Wines. In it, you'll learn to use taste and aroma to identify a wine's characteristics and quality. Additionally, there's a more in-depth look at wine regions, their uniqueness, and the different styles and types of wines that they produce.

    Having the WSET Level 2 certification allows you to bypass an otherwise required entrance exam.
